Do you have imaginary businesses? I know I do. One of them would be a chocolate boutique. Making exquisite yet amusing bon-bons. With beautifully designed boxes for the confections, and using El Rey chocolate, and then I wake up. Oh, I’ve made chocolates at home. The simple yet messy processes of dipping strawberries and rolling truffles taught me to respect actual chocolatiers. There are two or three excellent ones in Wellington, and I’m so pleased to be able to interview one of my favorites, Jo Coffey of L’Affaire au Chocolat.

Easter eggs

Easter eggs

Time flies and it’s now nearly Easter again. Jo has been making her wonderful marshmellow eggs – large and small. This year she has the plain eggs, a blackberry flavour the same as last year, and a new one with passion fruit. Very yummy.

You can buy them in the shop, in Kirkcaldies or at the Hill St market for the next two Saturdays.

L’affaire au Chocolat is open 7 days from 1st to the 23 December. We will be closed from 24 December through until after Wellington anniversary weekend.

Grenada Chocolate Company bars

Until the 23rd we are open until 6pm on weekdays and 4pm on weekends so come on in for a hot chocolate to push away those wet weather blues, an iced chocolate to celebrate summer and imported bars or Jo’s own creations for a reminder of what chocolate can and should be.

It has long been known that dark chocolate contains healthy antioxidants, but new research released in the British Medical Journal takes that one step further, claiming any chocolate ? dark, milk or white ? could cut the risk of developing heart disease by a third.

It’s happening!

Jo and Matt (People’s Coffee) ran their first Wellington on a Plate “The Dark Side of Coffee and Chocolate” evening on Monday and it went down very well with the 16 participants. For 1 1/2 hours Jo, Matt and Rene introduced the attendees to a number of combinations of single estate/fair trade coffee and chocolate from various producers that had been carefully paired together. No-one was in a hurry to leave at the end and conversations and questions continued for some time.

The next “The Dark Side of Coffee and Chocolate” evening is today.

And Jo has been busy making her special marshmallow eggs again. This year she has a variation that have a dab of blackberry jelly as an additional flavour. The blackberries are very slightly tart and complement the sweetness of the marshmallow beautifully.
